January is National Radon Action Month

Radon exposure is the second leading cause of lung cancer, behind smoking. Testing your home is the only way to know if you have a problem. You can’t see, smell, or taste radon. Testing can be done with a do-it-yourself kit that you send back to a laboratory for analysis, or you can hire a professional to test for you. Test kits are available from county/city health departments, hardware stores, or other retail outlets.

Grand Traverse County Health Department has test kits for $15.00. In the Sunday edition, January 6, of the Record Eagle, it states District Health Department No. 10 is providing free radon test kits at the Kalkaska County Health Department during the month of January.

More information regarding testing can be found at: http://www.michigan.gov/radon. For a free packet of information about radon, e-mail radon@michigan.gov or call 800-723-6642.
