Northwest Michigan Community Action Agency (NMCAA) today urged community members struggling with their home energy bills to call them if their household qualifies for the Home Heating Credit.

“Access to energy – whether electricity to run home appliances or fuel to heat our homes – is crucial to ensuring the safety and well-being of our families,” said Meg Havenga, Tax Program Manager. “It’s important that families who are struggling to pay their utility bills know that help is available.”

Households who make $40,000 a year or less are qualified for the Home Heating Credit through the state of Michigan. Applicants may apply for this credit through Northwest Michigan Community Action Agency in Traverse City, Petoskey, and Cadillac. NMCAA can assist applicants who live in one of the 10 following counties: Grand Traverse, Benzie, Kalkaska, Antrim, Emmett, Charlevoix, Wexford, Roscommon, Missaukee, and Leelanau counites. The Home Heating Credit is available for ALL Michigan residents.

The Home Heating Credit allows low-income families to have the opportunity to pay for their heating bills. Having access to energy is crucial for every household in Michigan to prevent pipes from freezing, maintaining medications, medical devices, food and more. Without access to heat in their homes, residents’ health is put at risk that could lead to death. That is why the Home Heating Credit is available to ensure that energy is affordable for all.
