The 2015 Tax Preparation season is rapidly approaching. Volunteers are needed to assist the low-income and elderly residents of the 10 county service area file their tax returns for free. Previous tax experience is NOT necessary; free training provided.
To volunteer as a tax preparer contact Mike M. at the Traverse City office or via email at firstname.lastname@example.org.
Emergency Utility Assistance through the Michigan Energy Assistance Program (MEAP) is now available. Community members can call into their local office to be pre-screened for an appointment. Assistance is available for both deliverable and metered fuel. There are income guidelines based on household size. There may be a wait for appointments due to a high demand for this service.
Also, pre-screening and enrolling clients of Consumers Energy and DTE into low-income plans to help with reduced energy bills and past-due balance forgiveness is available. For more information on the Consumers CARE or DTE Low Income Self-Sufficiency Plan (LSP) or to be pre-screened for enrollment, contact your local office.
Appointments are being scheduled for low-to-moderate income households. Call (231) 346-2141 or (800) 632-7334 to make your appointment today. Households can also self-prepare and file taxes at www.myfreetaxes.com.
